Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 148, May 28th, 2017
Chapter One: Forest
Families gathered together in sheltered spaces, a clearing in the
trees.
They established camps close to the springs that fed the clear streams.
They built their fires, burning bright, smoking fish, birds, rabbits,
and every other type of meat taken down with the shafts of their javelins and
atlatls, having returned to the primordial life.

Chapter Two: Plains
Families and tribes left the security of the forests,
the safe canopy of trees, looking across the plain, over the tall grasses,
exposing themselves beneath the clear sky.
The sky deep and blue, angry and gray, it was wide open
and oppressing.
There were dangers lurking everywhere, great beasts threatening,
other tribes.
Survival required constant vigilance.

Chapter
Three: Hills
The migrating tribes left the shelter of caves by the bubbling
springs, in the valleys and glens.
They crossed the open plain.
They climbed to the tops of hills, drawn closer to the stars from
which they came.
They piled stones atop one another, and built their homes with a wide
view of their surroundings.

Chapter Four: Mountains
We gathered the herds and flocks to us.
We walked with them, led them to water, protected them.
They gave us milk and meat, hides and wool.
We were symbiotic.
We led the herds to the mountain, and up the lofty peaks, looking for new
pastures, passes.
We found ourselves there, we found the sacred.

Chapter Five: Rivers
The tribes were always moving, always looking for new places.
They followed the rivers to their source, followed them to the clean
springs from which the water flowed, water flowing into stream, and into
rivers, feeding lakes, into the seas and oceans.
They founded their settlements there, at the head waters, the place of
beginning.

Chapter Six: Coast
The foot paths in the forests and those crossing the open prairie,
they were narrow, and shifting.
The tribes traversed the shorelines in long lines, single file.
The people came to the great lakes and seas, their broad coasts became
the first roads.
They trekked across them as if they were long and winding highways.

Chapter Seven: Ocean
On thin strips of wood, in fragile canoes, they hurled their bodies
onto the rivers and lakes, and into the sea, just as their ancient forebears
had done when they crossed the stars, looking for new ways of life, and searching
for mysteries.
Many were swept away and perished, in the accidental crossing of storms.
