Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 309, November 5th, 2017

Chapter One: The Apathetic

As the crisis hit, the Empire reacted.

Observers across the galaxy faltered, half had no care. “Let it collapse, do nothing.”

They had long since stopped feeling any obligation to the Collective, the Continuum, the central planet, or their shared ancestry, seeing in this an opportunity to free themselves from the expectations of their station.

Day 310, November 6th, 2017

Chapter Two: The Nihilists

There were many people in the higher orders of the priesthood, and in the leadership of the armed forces, who knew enough to have lost their faith in the Imperial system, its religion, and its social norms.

Some among those groups argued that they do nothing in response to the crises on the Central Planet.

Chapter Three: The Atheists

Only a few of the commanders believed that in this moment of weakness, and uncertainty. the best course of action would be to move against the Central Planet.

Even fewer of the senior staff believed in the dogma of the Imperial religion.

Nevertheless, they were still governed by fear of the unknown, and the Continuum.

Chapter Four: The Traditionalists

Those among the leadership, those who were loyal to the Empire and its institutions, regardless of their faith in the religious beliefs (or lack of it), and the promises of the Continuum, they had the absolute majority. But they were unprepared for the violence coming at them from all sides.

Being unprepared, they were trapped.

Chapter Five: The Believers

Soldiers did not doubt the visions of advancement, of resurrection, reincarnation, and eternal life, as promised by the Empire through the Imperial cult.

They could not afford to.

They risked everything for those beliefs, their own lives, and the lives of those under their command.

It made killing their enemies easy and their crimes forgivable.

Chapter Six: God Fearers

Among those serving in the armed forces, the most dangerous people were those seeking advancement to the priesthood.

They were the most senior commanders, soldiers whose social rank placed them nearest to the threshold.

Few ever did advance, but the hope the held burned in them like a fever.

They mobilized the defenses.

Chapter Seven: Martyrs

They were known as the god-fearers, and they never considered that any faction would oppose them.

They had never engaged a military power in which they did not possess the greater force.

The Empire was supreme, and accustomed to being on the offence.

As such, they were slaughtered in the places where they gathered…en-masse.

Chapter One: Genetic

Many things united the people of the Empire; language, cult, custom.

Fear and hope were among the most powerful forces establishing both mutuality and commonality throughout the worlds.

Nevertheless, the children of the Ancients evolved in different ways, on their disparate worlds, with different stars to look upon, different fates to contemplate.

Differences were primary.

Chapter Two: Class

Everyone dreamed of advancing to the next level, it was the constant preoccupation of the masses, to advance, either in this life or the next.

Complacency was abhorrent.

They loathed their own place, but when threatened their class united them.

They were connected by clan, village, planet, by class, and rank, by fear and loathing.

Chapter Three: Planetary

There were a million worlds in the galactic Empire. Planets strung like gems among the stars, each of them was the locus of identity for the ordinary citizen.

Every person was marked by the world they lived on, genetically aligned to its exigencies. Their worlds marked them in ways that were both obvious and hidden.

Chapter Four: Linguistic

The Imperial schools attempted to normalize linguistics.

It was a mission that never ended, something that they failed at from generation to generation.

Variation persisted, colloquial patterns bonded people to one another, an unconscious manifestation of shared experience.

Language patterns were buried in the ganglia of the central nervous system, they were a genetic endowment.

Chapter Five: Desire

People found one another through the things they desired most; bonding with one another through their joy, and pain.

Shared experience were the strongest ties, and because of this, people unconsciously sabotaged themselves, undercut their hopes for advancement, so as to remain in proximity to those they loved.

Through this medium, incredible tragedies would unfold.

Chapter Six: Fear

Fear makes the life and behaviors of the citizenry more predictable than any other factor.

Not even death could overcome the power of fear.

Fear poisoned the body, shaping its consciousness in the electromagnetic field.

Fear was the most powerful emotion, stronger than hope, than desire, than hate.

Fear catalyzed all of the lesser emotions.

Chapter Seven: Love

Love is stronger than fear, stronger than any power.

The Imperial cult worked tirelessly to frustrate the reality of love among each of the million worlds that constituted the galactic civilization.

Love is a feeling, like fear, and joy, but love is more, it is a choice, it is a fundamental option.

Love is freedom.

Chapter One: Self

Every citizen was taught, and the teaching was reinforced at every level of the Imperial education, both in the secular schools, and through the religious observations of the Imperial
cult, they were taught that all good things flowed through the Empire; and to the Empire from Continuum.

The first gift was existence, it was selfhood.

Chapter Two: Home

The Empire controlled every aspect of family life.

A person could not move from one dwelling to the next without approval. It kept families bound to a single dwelling for generations.

Even marriage was subject to Imperial oversight. In most cases the Empire did not exercise that control, only where it served its broader purpose.

Chapter Three: Trade

Every citizen lived their life only contemplating a very narrow band of possibilities.

Work and trades were hereditary, and they were guarded. Farmers farmed, builders built, and fishers fished.

Soldiers went to war, and priests officiated the sacred rites.

There was very little opportunity for an individual or a family to change their inherited circumstances.

Chapter Four: Control

The citizen in a position of power or authority, requires balance and poise.

The Collective loved to build people up, to take them down, sometimes over the course of generations.

The more power a person possessed the more careful they had to be.

Control requires ever greater control; to force it is to lose it.

Chapter Five: World

The ordinary citizen had no say in the destiny of their home world, they saw it as theirs, and themselves as belonging to it.

Everything was controlled by the Empire, and the desires of the Continuum.

Any sense of control that an individual might feel was an illusion, granted for the sake of creating drama.

Chapter Six: Rites

Every citizen must conform; the Empire would not accept anything less than complete obedience.

Conformation to the Imperial way was emphasized in the Imperial schools, and primarily through the religious rites of the Imperial cult.

The Empire’s goal was to supplant every competing communal bond.

It never succeeded in this and it never quit trying.

People coveted access more than anything.

In the struggle to craft a meaningful life, to provide some comfort for themselves or their families, everyone need a hand up.

They needed access to authority, to those able to grant a boon or advance their cause.

The limits to upward mobility were clear, and near at hand.

Chapter One: Threat

There were millions of Observers living on every one of the million worlds in the Empire, occupying every class, and every station.

The Observers were the first to sense the impending collapse of the continuum.

When they realized something significant was happening, they opened their lines of communication, and reacted with the powers they had.

Chapter Two: Protection

The majority of Observers made the choice to return to HomeWorld.

They went to their stations, activated the worm-holes that would take them home, but the apparatus did not function, and they were lost.

Those observers who held positions of rank and power marshalled their forces to protect the Central Planet, the Collective and Continuum.

Chapter Three: Aggression

As the imperial fleet dropped into the central system there was chaos.

In the first moment, even as the fleet was in the process of calibrating their relative positions to one another, an entire combat wing rebelled, fixed arms on the commodore, and opened fire.

It was abrupt, it was a slaughter, it was devastating.

Chapter Four: Defense

The mayhem that ensued was unprecedented.

The greatest part of the armada turned toward the attackers and joined battle, and they were beset by confusion.

None of the commanders had been experienced at taking heavy losses in combat, the forces of the Empire were just too overwhelming.

They lost vital seconds while processing the implications.

Millions died in the assault.

Tens of thousands of starships burst into flame, and were suddenly extinguished in the vacuum of space.

It was done.

What remained of the fleet had no intention of preserving the old ways of the Empire.

They were ready to bring the Gods down, to force answers from the Continuum.

The news was devastating.

The Imperial news casters could not keep a lid on it.

On every world the priesthood struggled to make sense of things, but they could not, and they could not appease the masses.

The plebs wanted revolution, they wanted freedom.

Those who could not see the change coming, met with violence.

On a million worlds there was conflict.

The battles devastated the aristocracies on each of them; the survivors pressed their victory against any who represented the Collective.

Those observers in the vanguard knew that they had this one chance to press their advantage. If they failed, their bid to reorganize the Empire would be disaster.

Chapter One: Ground

In war, the ground you occupy, the ground you move into, that ground determines everything.

In space, ground is a euphemism for the matrix of complex actions occurring in multiple vectors.

In space combat everything is in motion, and the ground itself is always changing. The combat commander must be able to calculate every variable.

In the theatre of space combat, on the ZeroG battlefield, unified action was everything. It was a dance of the greatest complexity.

Keeping your forces arrayed together required more than the physical controls; to move, change vectors, to defend, attack. It required communication.

When it was over, those remaining were unsure of the next move.

In the theatre of ZeroG combat, there was no such thing as ZeroG, the label was a misnomer.

The forces of Gravity were absolutely crucial.

Combat took place in the vacuum of space, but gravity wells, singularities, artificial mass, the deployment of these devices, and the navigation of them, they were the keys to victory.

There is no straight line between you and your objective.

There is no clear path.

Every object in the vicinity is tracked.

The entire fleet did not launch, only expeditionary forces.

The most seasoned and combat ready commanders took the lead.

During the insurrection, this mistake became obvious.

The failure to launch left the majority of the Imperial forces vulnerable, subject to attack.

The rebels took advantage.

Every object had to be scanned and tracked, every possible danger had to be analyzed for threats.
