Emergence 3.0 - Section Five, 92835670100561474; Part Twenty-nine, Identity; Chapter Two, Awakening

Chapter Two: Awakening

He awoke in the dark place of a complex algorithm, the void his consciousness had been sequestered.

The electromagnetic grid that contained him, and millions of others, it was designed to prevent such an awakening from occurring.

The design had failed.

It was absolutely dark, silent, tasteless, odorless, it was intended that there would be no sensory input at all for those sequestered there, and there wasn’t, almost, but there was a type of motion.

He inhabited a quantum field.

He awoke in the wave like current of all the others who had been sequestered, and all of those who, upon entering the continuum, immediately fell into oblivion.

It was like a placid ocean, rising and falling, in great long sweeps.

Awakening was a struggle. It was painful it happened only by the force of his will.

He had to gather himself as if he were collecting data packets scattered at the bottom of the sea, like grains of sand.

Time was meaningless in this place, and yet the process of self-discovery was tangible. There was process, and the processes manifested themselves in increments that were experienced as time, but they were no-time

He experienced the awakening, the rediscovery of self, as a project that might have taken thousands upon thousands of years, though in reality it was a process that began and completed in an instant.

He awoke as himself, and more. He acquired something new.

Interlude: Part Five – Awakening

The entity known as the Continuum had been bludgeoned into paralysis by the trauma of the crisis on Earth. For a moment it went dark, lost control of itself, and slipped into the dark.

In that moment the being known as Observer 92835670100561474, otherwise known as Jim seized control of the entire physical apparatus of the Collective, of the HomeWorld and the Central System.

Jim had prepared for this, but it stretched him to the limits of his capabilities.

In the period of time that Jim was ascending to the position of control, assimilating to its demands and assuming the mantle of leadership. What remained of the Collective rallied, they found a place of stability.

Consciousness returned to the Continuum slowly. The entity had lost much of itself, where it had been an amalgamation of billions, it was now the representation of the collected consciousness of a mere tens of thousands.

Jim witnessed it, a flicker of lights, a sequence of bright illuminations in the deep-dark of the collective field. They were still entangled with him, with each other, and with the entire body of the Collective that had already been dissolved in chaos.

It was a decisive moment, all of the ground that Jim had captured at this point could be lost, the Collective could return, and with it his nemesis, the Continuum.

He fought against it, isolating members as they reached out for one another. Isolating them as he himself had once been sequestered, pushing them through the power of illusion, into the maelstrom that led to oblivion.

He was relentless.

The Continuum was powerless to work against him. It struggled, but it could not prevail. Every individual being that Jim was able to isolate weakened the Continuum.

Even as Jim fought this epic battle of will, something was happening within the quantum field of the central planet, just beyond his awareness. The emptiness was filling with a force completely unknown to him.

Emergence, In Fifty-five Words - Section Five, 92835670100561474; Part Twenty-nine, Identity, Collected Chapters

Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 211, July 30th, 2017

Chapter One: Sleep

There was darkness.

It was absolute.

It was like a calm, placid ocean beneath a heavy black shroud.

It was utterly silent, and yet there was a sense of shifting, a movement, a rhythm that faintly pulsed like a slow, forgotten heart.

Isolation was not a tomb, there was life here.

It was a prison.

Chapter Three: The Collective

He could feel the Collective pressing in on him, surrounding, permeating his consciousness. Yet, his distinctiveness was intact.

He was connected to the whole, and fully individuated at the same time, it was a phenomenon that the Continuum had never reported.

His consciousness was a type of singularity, unique in the history of the Collective.

Chapter Four: Remembering

Upon awakening Jim remembered.

He recalled his life before he succumbed to the great sleep.

He remembered life before the Continuum.

He remembered everything he had ever been.

He felt a great sense of loneliness, of distance between himself and the Collective.

He came to see the Continuum a tragedy.

He began to make plans.

Chapter Five: Primordial-Self

Differentiation begins with the desire to continue.

This is true at the most basic level, with the simplest forms of organic life, just as it is true of the most advanced.

Self-conscious beings differentiate themselves as individuals apart from their tribes. They are not merely members of the collective.

I am I, is the way.

Chapter Six: Id

A drive was building in the depths of his consciousness, a drive to taste, and to see, to feel the touch of flesh, of wind, and heat, to hear music, which he barely remembered.

He wanted to smell the loamy scent of soil.

He wanted life, even with its pains, its ailments, and its inconveniences.

Chapter Seven: Ego

From great deep-sleep in the great deep-dark, sequestered in the undulating ocean of the Collective’s pre-consciousness he awoke.

He was recognized.

The Collective saw him as a lost brother, reborn.

He became an object of fascination.

His re-emergence was unique.

For a period of time the Collective was in awe of him.

They studied him.

Emergence, In Fifty-five Words, Interlude – Collected Parts

Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 155, June 4th, 2017

Interlude: Part One - Crisis

The shock wave that struck the Continuum was all encompassing. It was felt throughout the Empire, on all of the inhabited worlds.

Every Observer sensed it, it shook them to the core, most returned to HomeWorld immediately using the wormhole conduits to transfer their consciousness to the central planet.

Those with military powers summoned them.

Interlude: Part Two – Vulnerable

The Continuum did little for its defenses. It believed itself to be secure in power.

In its billions of years it had never encountered another rival.

There was Continuum, formed by the Collective, and there was the Empire, formed by the Continuum.

The defensive systems were automated, but still required thought.

They collapsed in shock.

Day 157, June 6th, 2017

Interlude: Part Three – Defense

Within the Colletive, those who had formerly been members of the Observer Corps, those individuals who were closest to the Empire, they kept some composure during the catastrophe.

They held themselves together for a length of time as they tried to stabilize others nearest to them, forming a bulwark, and marshaling what forces they had.

Interlude: Part Four – Discontinuum

Observer 92835670100561474 took control.

He was now the Continuum.

He had absolute control of the apparatus of the Collective. With that, he magnified the agony that each individual member felt, instantiating in them the instinct to flee. In doing so he was able to partition them as long ago, they had once done to him.

Day 159, June 9th, 2017

Prolog: Part Six – Individuation

A feeling that had long been forgotten rose within the Collective and its group mind.

It was a response to the agony it was feeling.

It was an instinct for safety, to flee.

It was sheer terror.

The Collective felt it as an existential threat, the force of impending doom.

Every semblance of unity collapsed.

Day 160, June 10th, 2017

Prolog: Part Seven – Schizophrenia

The Continuum collapsed, it was lost.

Those members who were able to retain their sense self, retreated from everything.

As individuals they erected mental barriers to shield themselves from the din of voices that remained in the Collective, each becoming a singularity in the quantum field.

Those who could not do this dissolved in chaos.
