Chapter Two: Home

Life in the Galactic Empire was like a woven tapestry, with the Continuum dictating how every thread was stretched across the loom, integrating each starnd into the fabric of the whole.

The images were constantly changing, moving, developing, even the tiniest detail of the lives of the citizens fed the hunger of the Collective.

The Imperial government was the loom, the Imperial schools and the cult were the shuttlecock, and the Observers in the field were like the hands that pulled the threads through.

The Empire controlled every aspect of family life, how it was employed, whether or not they would advance, how much they could save, how much food was on their table.

To resist the will of the Empire even in thought, was considered to be a grave sin.

A person could not move from one dwelling to the next without Imperial approval. The Empire kept families bound to a single dwelling for generations, only moving them if and when their rank changed, and that occurred only if it served the interests of the Continuum, and the narratives it was developing.

This offered the ordinary citizens a sense of normalcy and reliability, but it stifled all of their hope.

Even marriage was subject to Imperial approval. In most cases the Empire did not exercise that control, but it did when it served the broader purpose of the Continuum. A marriage proposal would be approved or denied “according to the will of the gods,” the Continuum and the Collective.

Procreation itself was tightly controlled.

For those with means, unsanctioned pregnancies could be terminated. Those who were afraid to report to the empire or who could not afford am abortion, were forced to abandon their children to the outcasts and untouchables.

Home

I am thinking of home today. Of what it means to have one, especially for those who do not.

I was with my good friend yesterday, who, at the age of fifty-three closed on his first home, in the Seward neighborhood, which he loves, on a block that he loves, exactly where he wanted to live after having had art studio close to it a couple of years ago.

We live in a safe city with good schools and markets, great restaurants and plenty of things to do.

He is close to the river, a couple of blocks from the mighty Mississippi, where it divides Minneapolis from Saint Paul.

He has a home now, a place to keep his family safe.

I was on the market just a year ago, looking to sell one place and buy another with my lady, to acquire a safe place that would be ours, together, with all of the rights that belong to a homeowner.

The prospect of not having that place was unsettling, even in a city as safe as Minneapolis is.

I am thinking of all the people locked up in detention centers and jails, immigrants, people like my great-grandparents, who gathered up their families and headed for America, to poverty and violence, corrupt governments and gangs, in the hope that they could raise their families in a safe place and call it home.

They may not share our language, but they do share our dreams. They have the same desire to see their children flourish as all people do, to receive an education, to have a career, to raise children of their own.

They want to live in a society that is governed by laws, not the capriciousness of “strong-men” and juntas. They are courageous, determined and bold.

Perhaps they came to the wrong place, or to this place at the wrong time, America, daughter of Liberty, has lost her mind.

I am thinking of much land we have in this great country of ours, it is mostly empty, and wide open spaces. I am thinking of how, without immigration our population is in decline.

I am thinking of how much we need these strong people to come and live here with us, to blend their strength with ours, build up our neighborhoods, open businesses and stores.

We need more of them, more families to move here and call this place home.

Rest

Place my home on a hill
Above the greening valley
Dreaming in the mist

Clear waters rippling
Sunlight’s flash on dappled streams
Lullabies of peace

Blissful and sleeping
In the tranquil quiet
Soft, the beating heart

Joyful in my rest
If I live another day
Good, among my friends

Chapter Seven: Home

While his consciousness uploaded into the cynergenic matrix of the HomeWorld, a process that would take some time. Jim set himself free from the couplings that held his mechanoid body in place.

He flew in his spherical body out of the docking bay that housed the bodies of the millions of observers assigned throughout the Galactic Empire.

He lifted into the vast atrium, so large that a small Earth-sized planet could fit inside it. It was a hollow place lacking any beauty or aesthetic.

Everything formed on the Central Planet was built and designed for the functions they were intended. The only rules that mattered were conservation of energy, and the laws of utility.

It was a place that had not changed one bit, for eons it had been exactly the same, it was stagnant, dark and lifeless.

It was busy, there were many thousands of observers coming and going at any moment. They were recognizable by their designation. If you shared history with them the automated analytics housed within the circuitry of the mechanoid bodies activated, and made sure that you knew who you were in proximity to, making sure that you were reminded of that history.

Jim shared history with everyone.

His arrival sparked the interest of the throng.

The entire collective was eager to receive the narrative flowing from the planet Earth. And while they were eager for the living drama, they were each individually wary of approaching Jim.

He was a relic. He was intransigent, virtually every member of the Collective was in some way conflicted by Jim, and the feelings that their history with him brought forward.

He could sense the Continuum just beyond them.

Emergence, In Fifty-five Words - Section Seven, War; Part Forty-five, Possession, Collected Chapters

Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 323, November 19th, 2017

Chapter One: Self

Every citizen was taught, and the teaching was reinforced at every level of the Imperial education, both in the secular schools, and through the religious observations of the Imperial
cult, they were taught that all good things flowed through the Empire; and to the Empire from Continuum.

The first gift was existence, it was selfhood.

Chapter Two: Home

The Empire controlled every aspect of family life.

A person could not move from one dwelling to the next without approval. It kept families bound to a single dwelling for generations.

Even marriage was subject to Imperial oversight. In most cases the Empire did not exercise that control, only where it served its broader purpose.

Chapter Three: Trade

Every citizen lived their life only contemplating a very narrow band of possibilities.

Work and trades were hereditary, and they were guarded. Farmers farmed, builders built, and fishers fished.

Soldiers went to war, and priests officiated the sacred rites.

There was very little opportunity for an individual or a family to change their inherited circumstances.

Chapter Four: Control

The citizen in a position of power or authority, requires balance and poise.

The Collective loved to build people up, to take them down, sometimes over the course of generations.

The more power a person possessed the more careful they had to be.

Control requires ever greater control; to force it is to lose it.

Chapter Five: World

The ordinary citizen had no say in the destiny of their home world, they saw it as theirs, and themselves as belonging to it.

Everything was controlled by the Empire, and the desires of the Continuum.

Any sense of control that an individual might feel was an illusion, granted for the sake of creating drama.

Chapter Six: Rites

Every citizen must conform; the Empire would not accept anything less than complete obedience.

Conformation to the Imperial way was emphasized in the Imperial schools, and primarily through the religious rites of the Imperial cult.

The Empire’s goal was to supplant every competing communal bond.

It never succeeded in this and it never quit trying.

Chapter Seven: Access

People coveted access more than anything.

In the struggle to craft a meaningful life, to provide some comfort for themselves or their families, everyone need a hand up.

They needed access to authority, to those able to grant a boon or advance their cause.

The limits to upward mobility were clear, and near at hand.

Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 029, January 29th, 2017

Chapter One: Journey

A wormhole is not a tunnel in space/time, linking one place to another. A wormhole is a shortcut through subspace, not a passageway at all. It is a transposition. It is trillions of atoms turning on point the point of pin.

A wormhole is to quantum entanglement, the solution Alexander provided for the Gordian knot.

Chapter Two: Transition

A flash of violet turned to white. A jolt, a buzz, a tensing like a seizure, followed by a sequence of darkness. The passage to the center of the galaxy was complete.

Jim, the Observer, arrived on the Central Planet in the body of his mechanoid self. He opened his optic lens.

He was home.

Chapter Three: Nativity
Jim was not his name, merely the most recent name he had adopted as Earth’s Observer. One of thousands over as many lifetimes.

His real name was lost in the Continuum; as all names were. Continuum referred to him with the designation Observer-92835670100561474.

But it was Jim who came to consciousness in the magnetic field.

Chapter Four: Self

Transitioning from one form of life to another, from the organic body of a human, to the mechanical form of a mechanoid was not easy. It was disorienting.

Organic life is thrilling. Being in the grid of silicone circuitry is not.

The mechanoid form had many more freedoms, but life in the body was grounded.

Chapter Five: Strings

The phenomenon of consciousness, it is electromagnetic. It pervades everything. There is no point in the universe that it does not touch. The essence of consciousness is concrescent, coalescent, emergent.

Consciousness exists in many forms; animal, mechanical, and in the collective field. There is no place where it is not.

Everything is entangled in consciousness.

Chapter Six: Bodies

The mechanoid body Jim occupied on the central planet had all of the sensory tools of a human, or of any of the descendants of the ancient race, only deeper, greatly enhanced, and far more powerful, with analytical tools superior to any computational device.

In this body he was completely linked to the Home World.
