New Year’s Day 2020 - A Holiday Reflection

Today is a day of beginnings.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.

A beginning is the time for taking the most delicate care that the balances are correct, the Princess Irulan said, in her biography of Muad’Dib

A small miscalculation at the outset, a subtle deviation from the plan, will cause you to miss your mark by a wide margin. It may cause you to never reach your end, or to end in a place you never intended to be.

Great care must be taken at the beginning.

Be mindful of your aim.

Today it is a day of resolutions.

Doing is being, is what Ray Bradbury said:

To have done is not enough.
You cannot lie about, and lie about the things you might just do someday.
But do, and win the game.

Great things are accomplished (and by great I mean great on any scale; socially, professionally, personally, spiritually, privately), great things are arrived at, built, discovered, in a series of small, regular and consistent steps.

With the steady application of effort, we can learn to do, and we can do just about anything.

Resolve to do something; be resolute.

Know this, if life is a river, it is a confluence of contradictions.

The process is just as important as the goal.

The archer is not only concerned with the object of her aim, but with the drawing of her bow, with the tension in the string and movement of her goal.

We must be prepared.

2020 marks the end of an era in American vision and the American experiment. The assault on truth, and the understanding of what truth is has finally undone its relevance to the social order.

It is doubtful that we can return to it.

Like the beast in the Book of Revelation, we have turned power over to the father of lies.

In 2020 we will put the liar on trial for abusing his power, for conspiring with our adversaries, he will be acquitted by his allies, and they will all lie some more, in the hope of continuing their grip on power.

We may hope for the future of America’s promise, and the extension of the promise to the whole world, but all we may have is hope…

Compassion, accountability, charity, honesty, integrity to call for these things is to speak to the wind, we hear them like voices crying out in the wilderness, lost in the din of madness.

Today is the first day, it is a day for unity and finding common purpose.

We will need to stand together if we are going to put an end to the madness, but our house is divided.

Today is the first day, it is a day for unity and finding common purpose.

We will need to stand together and support one another if we are going to advance the common good, but our house is divided, and those who are seeking to step up as champions, to lead the charge against destroyer are tearing each other down and lying to make themselves heard.

We are undone.

Chapter One: Discovery

Jim abducted people, he experimented on living tissues. He dissected cadavers he sent genetic materials back to the replicants of himself he had spread throughout the Empire, on a journey of thousands of light years.

Jim discovered something in the human race that affected the consciousness of its entire population, nanoparticles of the heavy metal, magnetite, collecting in the cerebellum, interacting in a unique way with Earth’s magnetic field, which allowed for the possibility of cynergy.

This dynamic established the conditions for Earth’s nous-sphere.

He found the abnormalities in himself first, after recognizing something unusual in the cognitive functions of his host body. He was hyper alert to the feelings and thoughts of the human beings he lived among

He tested the limits of his empathic powers, and he found at the upper end of its natural ability that he could cross the threshold into true telepathy.

It was an outstanding and surprising revelation.

He isolated the physical components of the telepathic abilities in himself first. Then he found the same components distributed in various degrees throughout the bodies of Earth’s human population.

He developed programs to augment it.

Chapter Two: Hypothesis

Jim understood a great deal about the phenomenon of consciousness. The Collective had been engineered on the basis of its science.

Jim’s personal history, suggested to him that he had been among the original members of the Collective, he had been one of the engineers who had built the first machines that captured the essence of the individual to house them in a perpetual state of being.

He had seen the early failures and witnessed their first successes, and he had been among the first volunteers to enter the Collective, once the technologies had been perfected.

He possessed these memories, though he was doubtful of whether they actually belonged to him, but even if they were not his own, he owned them now. He owned them completely.

He understood that consciousness is essentially an electromagnetic phenomenon. He did not understand why consciousness of the type that the Ancient People possessed, had emerged in his ancestors but nowhere else in the known galaxy, except for possibly on the planet Earth.

Jim theorized that there was as element at work in the cognitive process of human-beings, nanoparticles of magnetite, which had bonded with the human brain in a strong link, connecting each person to its magnetic field and through that field to one another, thereby creating a field of cynergy not un-like the Collective.

The type of consciousness which the Ancient People possessed was not merely a product of their genetic endowment, it was also a function of their interaction with a unique environment.

He theorized that no species could advance to the point of becoming a spacefaring civilization if their home planet did not have these properties, properties which allowed the inhabitants to connect with one another through a subconscious field.

Creativity and inventiveness happened there, through unconscious collaboration, in the nous-sphere.

Jim came to believe that the Ancient People had created the Collective at the height of their scientific achievement, on a world that had these same properties, they traveled to, built colonies and seeded life on a million other worlds that did not have such properties, while in the meantime, their cradle-star went supernova and destroy the planet of their birth.

He could not go back and study it to confirm his hypothesis.

Chapter Three: Testing

Jim developed a secondary interest.

For the first time in over a billion years he wanted something more than to pursue the destruction of the Continuum and the dissolution of the Empire.

He used the resources at his command to build laboratories for his research, he hid them from the Continuum, he spread them throughout the Empire, testing the genetic endowment of the people from every world, and the physical properties of the planets that comprised the Imperium.

He replicated his own body countless times, bifurcating his consciousness over and over again. He tested his theories on those golems, and learned how to mask the unique properties belonging to the genetic endowment of the humans of Earth from the prying eyes of the Continuum.

He replicated his consciousness in them, which put him at risk.

He feared that another version of himself would at some point abandon the plan he had devised, but despite his fears he pushed forward. He used their agency to conceal his covert activities; on Earth, throughout the Empire, and on HomeWorld.

He advanced his clandestine ambitions against the Continuum.

There were many times when he had to sacrifice the lives of his dopplegangers. When he had to shred the consciousness of one of his ghosts. He always did so with great reluctance. In every instance he saw his own likeness to the Continuum, as if he were just another monster, only with a far more limited reach.

The knowledge he gathered was everything, he deemed that it was worth the cost.

He found that nowhere else in all the Empire did the unique genetics of the population combine as they did on a planet like Earth to form the electromagnetic structure of a cynergenic field.

Chapter Four: Proof

He experimented on thousands of people, both the living and the dead.

Every single one of his living subjects spent the remainder of their lives in shock and terror, in fear and wonder, as they were slowly peeled apart in the sterile chambers of Jim’s laboratories, an environment that was completely foreign to them, by machines they had no frame of reference for.

The chambers were cold, brightly lit, filled with shining steel, and gravity defying objects.

After tens of thousands of people went under the knife and the microscope, he finally discovered it, a mutation in the genetic profile that allowed for the capture of nanoparticles of magnetite, housing them in the cerebral cortex, a concentration strong enough to allow for a cognitive connection that linked the humans of Earth, one to another, via the planet’s magnetic field, the strength of which formed an organic cynergy, a naturally occurring version of the Collective that the Ancient people and Jim as one of them, had engineered long ago.

The mutation had been a side effect of one of the many that had been devised by the Ancient people on their way to Earth. The capture of the magnetite created a kind of antenna in the human brain, interfacing with the electromagnetic functions of human consciousness.

This had not been intentional, nevertheless…it was real.

Jim’s research led him to believe that similar conditions must have held together on the native planet of the Ancient people, and not found on any other world since they left the place of their ancestral birth.

The natural Collective field fostered creativity and ingenuity at levels which could not be replicated without it. On every other world individuals lived out their lives in complete insularity, relying on artificial networks and data sharing to approximate true community.

Chapter Five: Planning

Once Jim understood the mechanism for the way in which the human race interacted with the cynergenic field, he was able to map out the changes for the genetic profile that he needed to establish in order to strengthen, and enhance those features.

Jim intended to introduce changes into the genetic profile of each tribe at the same time so that he could establish a base set of conditions upon which to build his design, and then he would be able monitor the effects of that by breeding the traits he was looking for into individual tribes separately.

In the scale of time that he and the Collective were used to operating in, he had precious little of it to work with. He feared he would lose the gambit before the next great planetary disaster struck Earth.

He intended to optimize the retention of nanoparticles in the cognitive structures of the brain, making each person a receptive node in the field of consciousness. He intended to stabilize that by giving each and every one of them access to the type of memory that was locked into the root code of their genetic structure.

He took his greatest risk by exporting his work off world, he sent tiny vessels speeding back across the void on a trek of light years to be recovered by him and his agents at the fringes of the Empire.

He needed to safeguard his discoveries against disaster and against the possibility of his failure, so that they could be recreated on any other world that the Empire discovered, having the same conditions that had obtained on the blue-green marble known as Earth.

His struggle would continue even in the event of his failure.

That much he guaranteed.

Chapter Six: Creating

The application of genetic science was meticulous.

It was artistry.

Jim created physical markers that would manifest themselves in the characteristics of the gene-pool he was developing. He could tell at a glance whether an individual was a part of one of the control groups he was studying, or an outlier.

There were many markers for every tribe, these guided him; pigmentation, hair color, eye color, the presence or absence of freckled skin; moles and birthmarks, these told him different things.

The Markers helped him map his progress to his signal goal, which was the birth of a human being possessing a mind powerful enough to harness the fullness of humanity, and stable enough to channel all of its raw emotion, the pain and fear that would be caused by the coming cataclysm, to transmit it through the quantum field of the worm hole like an invading host, directly into the Collective, to wield it like a battering ram against the Continuum.

He was a weapon smith practicing a different kind metallurgy.

What he was forging would be the deadliest weapon ever constructed.

He was weaponizing consciousness itself.

It would hit the Collective with the destructive force of a billion stars, or so he told himself when he was thinking of his work in the terms a poet might use, and when he did he realized he had gone far beyond his original mission, the simple elimination of the Collective and the elimination of its Continuum.

He was being shaped by his sojourn on Earth.

Chapter Seven: Resolution

Jim understood the risks he was going to take. He was about to recreate the same type of risk that he had engineered on the HomeWorld, the duplication of his consciousness, as many times as was necessary for him to be able to carry his mission forward on the limited time scale that was available to him.

Jim determined to plum the limits of his discovery, if there were any limits to what he had found.

The difference between what he was doing here, on Earth, and what he had accomplished on the Central Planet were considerable. In both locations he needed multiple-independent nodes of action. On home world, each and every node was connected by its field of collective consciousness.

They were a society of one.

On Earth their connectivity through the cynergenic field was more tenuous, it operated on a different frequency. It was less immediate.

Though it was possible for each unit to act autonomously on HomeWorld, to break away from the plan, to sabotage it, he and the other members of his private cabal would have known immediately, and while this possibility existed, there was not even the slightest hint of defection.

On Earth he was faced with considerable unknowns.

He cloned himself, planting his dopplegangers in every population center around the world, each one connected to the prime version of himself through the cynergenic field, like on HomeWorld, only this field was weaker, there were gaps in it, places where individuals could hide, or disappear.

He did this in violation of the laws governing his post, if he had been discovered he would have been destroyed, and likely the entire planet, with all of its art and beauty.

Continuum would have destroyed the Earth with him.

2019, it is an odd number. I mean it is both odd as a numeral, and odd in that it portends to be a year marked by a chaos in the fabric of American life; in our politics, in our markets, in the environment which sustains us all.

We must be prepared.

2019 marks the continuation of a new era in American politics, in the American social order, in the American vision and the American experience, the truth, and the understanding of what truth is will continue to be assaulted, the assault will be constant, and heightened.

We must stand against it.

2019 calls for the expectation of hope to return to our cultural norms, a hope for the future of America’s promise, and the extension of the promise to the whole world.

2019 will be the year for justice with compassion, and for holding our leaders accountable for their crimes.

It is the first day, it is a day for unity and finding common purpose. We will need to stand together, both to support one another in our individual aspirations, and to support the advancement of the common good.

Tension, Adversity and Courage

The experience of life is a play between tensions, between the demands on our time and attention that comes to us in greater and lesser degrees. Throughout our days and weeks, our months and years.

The tensions we experience are like the strings of a guitar or a piano, or the skin of a drum, the tension in them must be just-right or there is discord, when the tension in our lives is right, then we are balanced and we are in tune.

The tension exists between competing aims, objectives, ambitions, needs.

There is tension between our desires for ourselves and our responsibilities to others.

There is tension at work, and also at play.

There is tension in all of our relationships, in our hopes for ourselves and in our hopes for each other, in the way we communicate; whether we are affable or apathetic, talkative or silent, argumentative or agreeable, there is always tension.

At times, when the tension in our lives is slack, we experience it as an absence, as a lack.

We must be sensitive to the tension in our lives, like a sailor reading the wind in the sail, tacking left then tacking right, navigating the headwinds to cross the space between where we are and where we want to be.

We must train to be on the mark, we must practice for perfection.

Occasional adversity is good, the tension strengthens us, even in our closest relationships, even with our friends and partners, or our employers and coworkers.

Like the tension in our bodies when we stretch, or lift weights, tension makes us stronger, more nimble, it gets us in shape.

Conflict, when coupled with the genuine desire for its resolution, helps us to step outside of ourselves and teaches us to take another person’s perspective into consideration.

We grow in this way.

We develop empathy in this way, by listening we develop a sensitivity to the tensions in another person’s life, to the rhythm of their narrative to its music, by hearkening to their desires and to their needs we come to understand our own, better.

We are each of us a mirror of the other.

Controversy promotes reflection, it engenders critical thinking and the analytics of self-reflection.

An argument, when it is pursued to its natural end, when disentangled from the ego and the tension of competition, if the argument adheres to the rules of logic, discourse and polity, if it follows those forms the argument will unite individuals rather than drive them apart.

Even so…conflict, while potentially beneficial, is not wholly desirable.

Nevertheless, it is always better to dispute with someone when we think that they are in error, then to allow them to wander in error when a word or two might spare them.

Indifference will not resolve anything, neither will it draw anyone into a healthy state of tension, between the way we see the world, and the way the world actually is.

Be mindful, if we enter into disputation honestly, comport ourselves with decency, we may find that we are relieved of our own errors.

Prepare for this, be ready for it, we must be willing to receive correction at any time. It may be uncomfortable, even distressing, but it is liberating in the end.

When tension and adversity bring about pain, this is a true test of a person’s courage.

It does not matter if the pain is physical, emotional or intellectual, even spiritual.

A person must bear within themselves a willingness to rise above the challenges they face, a willing heart is a peaceful heart.

Open it.

We are often confronted with challenges that we did not choose for ourselves, would not have chosen if we had a say.

These are the dynamics of livings, se la vie, such is the nature of life.

Our willingness to accept and meet those challenges is what allows us to remain in control even when the anguish is great.

Faith sustains hope, and being sustained, hope gives birth to love.

Love endures all things.

The courageous heart is the union of these three; it is their flower.

This is the essence of courage.

A courageous spirit bears fruit on every branch of a person’s life, informing all of their relationships, touching them with providence.

Courage has a magnetism, amplifying all of a person’s best traits, drawing the courage of others to itself, magnifying their strength and power as well, while at the same time repelling the traits that weaken us; fear and doubt, envy and malaise.

Be courageous, master the tensions that bind us, resolve conflict and overcome adversity.
