Emergence 3.0 - Section Seven, War; Part Forty-seven, Tactics; Chapter Four, Space

Chapter Four: Space

Everything is changing, shifting all the time. The only certain thing is the objective, and that in itself was a target in motion.

In the theatre of ZeroG combat, there was no such thing as zero gravity, the label was a misnomer.

Gravitational fields were among the most important factors to consider in the shifting landscape of combat.

Manipulation of the forces of Gravity was absolutely crucial, understanding them, tracking their movement, anticipating the flux in them was vital to any mission commander.

There were batteries of instruments on every interstellar combat vessel devoted to the detection of gravitational waves and particles, and there were humans interpreting those signals and sending data to all of the smaller vessels under its command.

Combat took place in the vacuum of space, but any combat taking place in proximity to the gravitational field of planetary or astral bodies had to take precise measurement of their power, both to dampen or accelerate inertia.

Gravity wells, and singularities, could be generated artificially. The generation of artificial mass were among the deadliest weapons in the imperial arsenal.

It took only moments for artificial mass to become actual mass by capturing nearby objects.

The tactical deployment of these devices and the navigation of them, were the keys to victory in deep space.

It could be catastrophic if deployed to close to a planet or a star.

Emergence, In Fifty-five Words - Section Seven, War; Part Forty-seven, Tactics, Collected Chapters

Emergence 2.0
A Novel – In 55 Words a Day
Day 337, December 3rd, 2017

Chapter One: Ground

In war, the ground you occupy, the ground you move into, that ground determines everything.

In space, ground is a euphemism for the matrix of complex actions occurring in multiple vectors.

In space combat everything is in motion, and the ground itself is always changing. The combat commander must be able to calculate every variable.

Chapter Two: Time

In the theatre of space combat, on the ZeroG battlefield, unified action was everything. It was a dance of the greatest complexity.

Keeping your forces arrayed together required more than the physical controls; to move, change vectors, to defend, attack. It required communication.

When it was over, those remaining were unsure of the next move.

Chapter Three: Light

During the battle, in the space around the Central Planet, the brilliant display of energies was followed by the absence of any light at all.

The onslaught lit the structure of HomeWorld, revealing to human eyes for the first time the expanse of the artificial world.

It was more massive than the mind could imagine.

Chapter Five: Movement

ZeroG tactics must be developed according to the following understanding:

In the vacuum of space, when you are maneuvering and not subject to gravity, where there is no resistance, everything is in motion.

There is no straight line between you and your objective.

There is no clear path.

Every object in the vicinity is tracked.

Chapter Six: Supply

The majority of the High Command anticipated a prolonged engagement.

The entire fleet did not launch, only expeditionary forces.

The most seasoned and combat ready commanders took the lead.

During the insurrection, this mistake became obvious.

The failure to launch left the majority of the Imperial forces vulnerable, subject to attack.

The rebels took advantage.

Chapter Seven: Range

In the ever changing dynamics of ZeroG combat the range between opponents was in constant flux.

Every victory created new obstacles, sudden changes in the vectors of pilotless craft, the creation of debris fields, scattering in the void.

Every object had to be scanned and tracked, every possible danger had to be analyzed for threats.

There is Hope in Space

There is Hope in Space

The world reached a tipping point in the amount of greenhouse gasses that are lingering in the atmosphere.

The newspapers said we had passed a point of no return. This is not exactly true, we can sequester those gasses again, it will just take millions of years.

The changes in our atmosphere, in the global heat index, these are things we can adapt to. This means that we are on the brink of an evolution in the species homo sapient sapient in the very near future (near in relation to geological time). We will survive the changes that are coming, we will survive them, and we will evolve, but long before the physical evolution sets in, we will undergo incredible change along the lines of our social order.

We are going to see an incredible shift in agriculture and food distribution; in energy production and consumption; in information and militancy, and policing. These changes will come in conjunction with massive upheavals in the distribution of the human population throughout the world.

We are already living in a time of unprecedented human migration; due to war, famine, and scarcity. People are on the move looking for work, safety, a better life; a chance to live in peace, and raise their families. We will be adding to these causes of migration soon; as coastlines disappear, and entire nations are swallowed by the oceans and seas.

Our own country will be affected by this in ways few of us are anticipating. As the southern coastal states become uninhabitable, millions of people will be on the move; upsetting the well-defined cultural boundaries that everyone is used to now, red-state, blue-state, these comfortable norms will lose their meaning, there will be violence, strife, contention because of this.

It is coming, and our country is so ideologically divided at this time that we are unable to lay down plans to address it in advance.

There are a few visionaries directing their fortunes to finding a path for human beings, they are looking for an exit, for us, among the stars.

There is water on Europa, it is likely that there is life as well. They are preparing the way, to bring humans to Mars, and therein lies our salvation.
These are the endeavors that can shape the evolution of our culture, forging us into a united society. Allowing us to persevere even in the midst of the radical change that is coming our way. If there is no escape valve, no pressure release, no common cause to bring us together, no aspiration to drive us, we will cook down here and fester. We will survive, but we will be doomed.

May you live in interesting times, it is an ancient curse, we are living in the most interesting times of all, the rapidity of change is outpacing or ability to keep up with it.

What is constant is this; love what is good, and seek what is just, be humble, and giving, and kind. The resolution to what ails us can be found in these.
